I admit, I'm one of those people who buy a bottle of wine based on how great the label looks. If the label doesn't excite me, then chances are, the wine won't either.

There are many factors to consider when designing really great packaging and labels. Questions you will want to ask are "Who is my intended audience?" "What is the mood, feeling, ambiance I am trying to create with my design?" "Am I expressing my brand identity through my labeling and packaging?"
Is there a design style you prefer? Is it a trendy minimalist look or a more classic elegant style? Are you drawn to a more organic, artistic look? What appeals most to you?
You'll be asking all these questions and more as you develop your personal style and apply that to your packaging.
Creating A Cohesive Look
When I design packaging for a client, the first thing I ask is who they are intending to sell their product to. Obviously, a lot depends on what the product is. Beard cream requires a completely different design than copper tubing. I want to know as much as I can about what my client's product is, who it is intended for, what age group and gender it will appeal to, and if it is a stand-alone product or part of a family of products.
The next step is to determine how the new product design ties in to existing collateral such as the company logo, marketing pieces, business cards, and signage. Creating a cohesive look is a key element in gaining credibility for your product with your prospective customers or clientele.
